Blepharoplasty is an outpatient surgery which improves the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids.
Blepharoptosis and dermatochalasis are medical conditions in which the upper eyelids droop, usually caused by excess eyelid skin. These conditions are most common in elderly men and women. As we age, we lose elasticity in our eyelid skin and muscles in the lid weaken. This results in 'droopy' eyelids and decreased peripheral vision.
Blepharoplasty is usually a cosmetic procedure. However, in some instances, it may be medically necessary to improve peripheral vision. The surgery requires incisions to be made in the eyelid to remove excess skin. These incisions are made along natural skin lines which minimizes risk of scarring.
